چکیده

In this paper we describe a new solution for stable haptic interaction with deformable object simulations featuring low servo rates and computational delays. The solution presented is a combination of the local model and the virtual coupling concepts proposed in the past. By varying the local model impedance depending on the local stiffness of the deformable object, the interaction between local model and simulation can always be made stable independently of low servo rates or computational delays. Moreover, by using more complex local impedances that feature an integral term, we are able to control the steady-state error between the device and the surface of the deformable object. This allows us to maximize the Z-width of the simulation, while obtaining overall stable behavior without using any added damping. The local model is always computed using the current deformable object surface, thus allowing for multipoint contact interaction, i.e., allowing multiple users to feel each other’s influence on the object. The proposed solution is presented and analyzed in a multirate setting. Experimental results employing a Phantom haptic interface are presented. KEY WORDS—AUTHOR: PLEASE PROVIDE

Multirate Simulation for High Fidelity Haptic Interaction with Deformable Objects in Virtual Environments

Haptic interaction is an increasingly common form of interaction in virtual environment (VE) simulations. This medium introduces some new challenges. In this paper we study the problem arising from the difference between the sampling rate requirements of haptic interfaces and the signi cantly lower update rates of the physical models being manipulated. We propose a multirate simulation approach...

A Multi-Threaded Approach for Deformable/Rigid Contacts with Haptic Feedback

This paper presents a physically based method to deal with haptic feedback of manipulated deformable virtual objects in contact with rigid or deformable environment. The haptic rendering algorithm is based on the Signorini’s formulation of the contact as proposed in theoretical mechanics. Since haptic interaction requires high refresh rates, a multi-threaded methodology, sharing configuration v...

Haptic Dissection of Deformable Objects using Extended Finite Element Method

Interactive dissection simulation is an important research topic in the virtual reality (VR) community. There are many efforts on this topic; however, most of them focus on building a realistic simulation system regardless of the cost, and they often require expensive workstations and specialized haptic devices which prevent broader adoption. We show how to build a realistic dissection simulati...

Dynamic Local Models for Stable Multi-Contact Haptic Interaction with Deformable Objects

This paper describes a new technique for allowing multiple users to haptically interact with a set of deformable slowly-simulated objects in a stable manner. Stability has been approached in the past by various researchers using passivity theory in order to avoid having to model the human operator closing the haptic loop. None of these solutions however can work well without the use of high upd...

Interaction with Virtual Deformable Objects for Surgery Simulation Using a Hyper Redundant Haptic Display

In this paper, the interaction of our novel hyper-redundant haptic display ViSHaRD10 with virtual deformable objects is investigated. ViSHaRD10 has serial kinematic structure and 10 degrees of freedom. The work mainly represents benchmark tests for this novel display. Additionally it aims to create easy-to-use virtual deformable objects. Two different deformable objects were developed. The defo...
